Types of Tournaments

There are three major types of tournaments: Constructed, Sealed, and Draft. All tournament styles have timed games, using the same “chess clock” you can choose to play with in a casual game.

Constructed tournaments require you to bring a deck to the tournament, composed of cards in your collection. The default type of Standard means that all cards permitted.

Sealed tournaments require you to bring either event passes or an unopened starter deck and unopened booster packs. Decks and packs are opened at the start of the tournament, then each player is given some time to use the Limited Deck Builder and construct a deck from that limited card pool. Players cannot access any other cards in their collections for this kind of tournament.

Draft tournaments require players to bring unopened booster packs (typically three). At the start of the tournament, each player simultaneously opens one of his packs, takes one card from it, then passes the remaining cards around the table. This process of “drafting” continues until each player has taken 15 cards, and repeats for each of the other booster packs brought to the tournament. Players then use the Limited Deck Builder to construct decks out of the cards they drafted. They cannot access any other cards in their collections for this kind of tournament.

Note that Draft tournaments have different deck construction rules from regular play. The typical minimum deck size is 25 cards. You may freely mix cards from any factions and classes. And in addition to the cards you draft, you will have access to one “proxy vehicle” from each of the three factions, and one “proxy mission” for each of the four difficulty levels (20, 40, 60, and 80). These proxies are generally weaker than actual cards of the appropriate category, but you may choose to use them if you wish (or if you did not get the necessary cards in each category during the drafting process).
